The OVERVIEW:
Doodlerama is a 2-D platforming puzzle game in which you as the player are tasked with solving platforming puzzles by drawing solutions or “doodles” with three primary colors: red, yellow, and blue.
The game is broken up into 2 stages: the first stage is where you control the camera and navigate the level to figure out and draw potential solutions and paths. The second stage then allows you to move your character through the level and interact with your drawings to avoid obstacles and reach the end.
When the player comes into contact with a doodle, the player’s color will match the color of the doodle. Each color grants a certain ability to your player if they touch that particular color. Depending on the color, the player jump higher, run faster, or even block traps. You can use your doodles in certain color combinations to navigate through each map.
MY ROLE:
Lead 2-D Artist, Animator, Level Designer
my workflow:
As the lead 2-D artist on the project, I was responsible for creating all the art assets for Doodlerama. I primarily used Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop for the project. The art-style I decided to employ was one inspired by actual paint and watercolor styles.
By using the pen tool to alter vertices, I was able to sketch out and create the main character and various objects found throughout the game (i.e. platforms, the brush cursor, the color palette).
The paint blot effect was also achieved in Illustrator. First I created a simple vector-based circle. I added a gradient mesh to the circle then used the lasso tool to select specific vertices. After I selected an assortment of vertices, I altered the color by adding different shades of the same color including white. Finally, I used the wrinkle tool to "blend" the vertices and thus blend the colors, achieving a watercolor splot effect.
